The Rhodesian Ridgeback loves to run and will need exercise. Puppies should be given the opportunity to play until they are tired and taught the basics of walking on a leash. Because they are a large breed, repetitive exercise like jogging must be avoided until they are at least 18 months old to allow their joints and bones to grow properly without damage. By the time they are 6-8 months old, they can take a pretty good walk, but long hikes will have to wait until they are at least 12 months old. But they will do “zoomies” around your yard!
With proper play and exercise, they will sleep inside your house and not be destructive. If your Ridgeback starts to tear things up, they are bored, and you need to mix in a new place or activity to keep them stimulated. I am all for obedience training, scent work, or other activity that will keep your Ridgeback interested and engaged.
Crate training saves lives! All my puppies spend time in crates before they go to their new homes; usually from the time they are 5 weeks old. I attach a crate to their play area, and they learn to sleep there as a safe space. Crate training gives your puppy a safe place when they need to sleep, chew quietly, and when you are unable to watch them. It helps with housebreaking, saves furniture and your house; and stops your puppy from consuming things that can harm them like electrical cords or socks. I require crate training for my puppies to set everyone up for a happy life. If you need information on how to crate train, let me know!
